Anyone who has ever been involved in a car accident knows how stressful the claim process can be. The back and forth with your insurance company just to have your claim covered can take weeks, if not longer. In Texas, where state law requires automobile insurance, dealing with insurance companies can be a dreaded task.

Allstate understands how stressful auto insurance can be, and has taken steps to eliminate the hassle for customers. With the new Allstate Auto Claim Satisfaction program, Allstate makes one bold statement to customers: We will prove to you that you can trust us with your automobile insurance.

The Allstate Auto Claim Satisfaction Guarantee comes standard with Allstate car insurance policies, and Allstate doesn’t charge you extra for the added peace of mind.

The Allstate guarantee states: If, for any reason, you aren’t happy with how your auto claim is processed, Allstate will give you a credit on your premium for up to six months.

How? It’s simple.

You must be an Allstate customer in Texas (or another state where the Claim Satisfaction Guarantee is available); you must have been involved in a car accident after the Claim Satisfaction Guarantee became available (In Texas, the Claim Satisfaction Guarantee was put into effect January 1, 2012). Accidents occurring in 2011 or earlier are not eligible.

Allstate agent Vickie Lundquist has a primary goal for all of her clients– satisfaction and peace of mind. Lundquist will work to ensure you are satisfied on any claim. Just knowing the guarantee exists should give you the peace of mind knowing Allstate has you covered if you are ever involved in a car accident. To learn more about Allstate Claim Satisfaction Guarantee, contact Vickie Lundquist, Allstate agent.

This week, April 22 through April 28, marks National Crime Victims' Rights Week, and the Collin County District Attorney's Office is participating in the week-long event with additional local organizations to raise awareness about the challenges that plague crime victims.

National Crime Victims' Rights Week has been in place since 1981, and serves as an observance designed to remind residents and to celebrate the progress made regarding victims' rights and services.

The Collin County Crime Victims' Council will host a reception in honor of crime victims throughout the community and those who serve them.  The event is scheduled for Monday, April 23 at 3 p.m. at the Allen Senior Recreation Center.  Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis and Allen Chief of Police Brian Harvey will participate as guest speakers at the reception.

In addition to the reception, the Collin County Crime Victims' Council will co-sponsor the Empty Shoe Project 2012 with the Collin County District Attorney's office.  Throughout the week, empty shoes will be laid out on the steps of the Collin County Courthouse to remind visitors of the crime victims who have been a part of the justice system in the past year.

Donations of shoes are being accepted, and following the Empty Shoe Project, shoes will be donated to a local church group for distribution on mission trips.  If you'd like to donate shoes, please contact the Victim's Assistance Division of the Collin County DA's Office.

Storm season is upon us, and you can never be too prepared on what to do during a tornado.  The City of McKinney has provided useful information for Collin County and North Texas regarding tornadoes and a list of safety precautions to take if one comes your way.

From the City of McKinney's Office of Emergency Management:

Tornadoes are nature’s most violent storm and can cause widespread devastation in seconds.  Spawning from strong thunderstorms, a tornado appears as a rotating funnel-shaped cloud that extends to the ground with whirling winds.  Tornadoes are rated on the Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale between 0 and 5.

EF Scale

Peak tornado season for the City of McKinney is March through May, but there are still possibilities through summer and fall.  Tornadoes may strike quickly with little or no warning and may appear translucent until dust and debris are picked up or a cloud forms in the funnel.

WATCH VS. WARNING

A tornado WATCH is issued when the conditions are favorable for a tornado to be produced.  Watch the sky for signs of the storm and stay tuned to weather and news sources.

A tornado WARNING is issued when a tornado has been sighted by storm spotters or indicated on radar.  Take shelter immediately when there is a tornado warning for the City of McKinney or Collin County.

BEFORE A TORNADO

  • Listen and watch for information for Collin County and the City of McKinney.
  • Look for the following signs:
    • Dark, often greenish sky
    • Large hail
    • A large, dark, low-lying cloud, including rotation in the sky
    • A loud roar, similar to a freight train
  • Have your NOAA Weather Radio on or available in case of a power outage.
  • Be prepared to take shelter immediately.

DURING A TORNADO

  • Take shelter immediately in an underground shelter, basement, or saferoom.  If there is no basement, go to an interior, windowless room on the lowest level.  Put as many walls as possible between you and the outside.
  • If you are in a vehicle, trailer, or mobile home, get out immediately and go to the lowest floor of a nearby building or storm shelter.
  • If you are caught outside with no shelter, lie flat in a nearby ditch or depression and cover your head with your hands.  Be aware of the potential for flooding.  Do NOT get under an overpass or bridge.  Never try to outrun a tornado in an urban, congested area like the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.  Instead, leave the vehicle immediately for safe shelter.

AFTER A TORNADO

  • Continue listening to NOAA Weather Radio or local news coverage.
  • Wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and sturdy shoes when examining your home for damage.
  • Watch for fallen power lines and broken gas lines and report them to your utility company.
  • Take pictures of damage of the building and contents for insurance claims.
  • Clean up medications, bleach, or other flammable liquids that may become a fire hazard.

Have you ever considered what you would do if your home were damaged or destroyed in some sort of disaster? Not only the physical structure of your home, but everything inside. Imagine, for a moment, how you would move forward without homeowner’s insurance in place. Where will you and your family stay? Imagine the cost of alternative living situations.

Without homeowner’s insurance you are taking a huge risk. Allstate’s Homeowner’s Insurance policy covers structure, personal property, liability protection, guest medical and reimbursed living expense. What does that mean for you? Here is a breakdown of the benefits of each of these features:

Structure - Coverage for a freestanding home usually includes the entire structure as well as sheds and detached garages. For a condo, depending on your policy, the external walls may not be covered, but interior structures would be covered.  For manufactured homes, while the entire structure is typically covered, detached sheds and garages may require an additional policy.

Personal property - A homeowner’s insurance policy will cover repair or replacement costs for items in your home up to a specific limit. It’s important to assess the items in your home that have value, or that have appreciated in value, and make note of the value of items inside your home.  More expensive items may not be covered in your general policy, but you would have the option of adding coverage for high value items.

Liability protection - In the event that a lawsuit is brought against you or a family member, your homeowner’s insurance policy is designed to protect your family’s property and assets against liability. Assets covered by this liability protection include retirement accounts, investments, liquid assets, personal property and home and real estate equity.

Guest medical - In the unfortunate event that another person is accidentally injured in or around your home, guest medical coverage will help you pay for necessary medical expenses up to your policy limits. Covered medical expenses usually include medical, surgical, x-ray, dental, ambulance, hospital and more.

Reimbursed living expenses - If your home is ever destroyed or damaged to the point that you have to find alternative temporary living arrangements, reimbursed living expenses will cover your expenses during that period of time.

Additional coverage - If you have expensive items in your home, additional coverage for high value items is recommended. Likewise, if you live in an area where flooding or earthquakes may occur, it is wise to seek additional coverage for these natural disasters that are not included in your basic homeowner’s policy.

Homeowner’s insurance is not a cost you can afford to skip. The peace of mind you will have knowing your home, its contents and your family are covered is well worth it.
