McKinney readies to raise funds and awareness for cancer prevention with the Relay For Life Kick-Off on Jan. 11, 2014

If you want to help fight cancer while having fun, then sign up as a participant for the annual American Cancer Society fund-raising event – the Relay For Life of McKinney on Jan. 11 in downtown McKinney.

A kick-off to celebrate the event and help increase community awareness about this successful fund-raiser will be held 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sat., Jan. 11 on the east lawn of the McKinney Performing Arts Center, 111 N. Tennessee St. The bands 121 North and One Sound will perform on a stage along Tennessee Street, which will be closed to traffic during the kick-off. The 2014 ACS Relay For Life of McKinney Committee and McKinney Main Street are working together to make this kick-off a success.

The actual 2014 Relay For Life of McKinney event, which is being presented by Texas Oncology-McKinney, will be held 7 p.m. until midnight Fri., April 25 at the Ballfields at Craig Ranch, 6151 Alma Road in McKinney. Unlike previous years, the 2014 event will not be a 12 hour, over-night event due to feedback from participants, sponsors, and committee members who said that they wanted an earlier closing time.

The 2014 Relay For Life will still feature the same popular events that have accompanied the event for more than one decade, including the Cancer Survivor Walk; the Luminaria event, where candle lit bags are lined along the track during a moment of silence to honors those who’ve lost their battle with cancer; the Mr. Relay Walk; entertainment; games; and activities for kids.

The event will also include vendor tables and sponsor tables with information from the various businesses and organizations that sponsor the event to help make it such as successful fund-raiser. “Everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer. At Texas Oncology-McKinney we know hundreds of people who are affected by cancer, and they all become family,” said Jennifer Miller, one of the receptionists who helps cancer patients daily at her job at Texas Oncology-McKinney, which is the 2014 Relay For Life of McKinney title sponsor. “We relay for them.”

In addition to working with cancer patient, Miller has also volunteered a lot of her time by serving as captain of the Texas Oncology-McKinney Relay For Life of McKinney Team Captain and as a member of the 2014 Relay For Life of McKinney Committee.

Other fund-raising events will be held from now throughout the year until April 25 to help raise funds for the ACS. One of those will be the Illuminate The Night neighborhood event, which began last year, and helped to increase awareness about Relay For Life in neighborhoods throughout McKinney. Team fund-raising events will also be ongoing throughout the year until the night of Relay For Life. Members of those teams not only hail from McKinney, but from surrounding cities including Princeton, Farmersville, Melissa, Anna, Prosper, Lowry Crossing, and Blue Ridge.
