Owls are amazing birds of prey! There are many interesting aspects about them that you may or may not know. For example, owls’ eyes are fixed in their sockets. This is why they must turn their entire head to see something in a different direction. They can’t turn their head completely backwards, but have a total 270 degree view.

Most owls are nocturnal, meaning that they’re active at night. Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary invites you to come see them in a live owl presentation on Saturday night at 6:30 P.M. and learn more about them. Then, stay for a guided night hike on our sanctuary trails to see if you can hear them.

If you’ve ever been on a hike and the sun set before you finished, you know that experiencing a trail at night can be a completely different experience from hiking during the day. Landmarks change, as can your sense of direction. Even if you’ve hiked a trail several times, it can feel completely unfamiliar.

Explore the thrilling sights, smells, and sounds of night with Heard Trail Guides. Night hikers will be encouraged to sharpen their senses to be able to spot signs of animal life and learn more about the inhabitants of the Heard.

Clif KiD samples will be distributed while supplies last.  This event sells out each year. Preregistration is required for all night hikes. Registration available at www.heardmuseum.org.

The weather today wasn't exactly what we Texans are used to, but the sanctuary at Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary is always beautiful in a new way with a dusting of snow.

Get out of the house (or car) and experience the most unique holiday light display in North Texas. On December 14th, 20th & 21 from 6:30-9 P.M. see thousands of lights—many synchronized to holiday music— and holiday décor along a half mile Heard nature trail. This display is designed to enhance, not overpower, the Heard's pristine nature preserve.

Children and the young at heart will enjoy the opportunity to have a photo taken with Father Christmas and Mother Nature in a festive setting by the professionals at Clix Photography. Purchase hot beverages and specialty desserts (a portion of the concession sales also benefits the Heard).

Cure your cabin fever! Family-friendly entertainment will complement the holiday atmosphere. You'll be delighted by local musicians (including Crystal Yates, winner of the regional Texaco Country Showcase) performing live holiday music in the Heard outdoor amphitheater. Keep an eye out for strolling carolers as they walk through the museum and grounds.

Show your support Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary (a local private, nonprofit 289 acre nature preserve and museum) and have fun with family or friends at this holiday fundraiser. Tickets at the door are only $9 for adults & seniors and $6 for kids 3-12 (children 2 and under are free). Buy your tickets online at heardmuseum.org before the event and save $2 per ticket off the at-the-door price.

Holiday Trail of Lights is presented by Baylor Medical Center of McKinney and sponsored by 94.9 KLTY, NBC 5, and McKinney Community Development Corporation.  Hot beverages will be provided by Coffee N Cream. Photography services will be provided by Clix Photography. Lighting design is provided by Alfresco Living.
