Be transported back in time to an era of speakeasies and flappers with Matt Tolentino and The Singapore Slingers Orchestra, a quirky retro jazz group featuring Prohibition-era music of yesteryear, presented by the McKinney Performing Arts Center (MPAC) on May 2 at 8 p.m.

The Singapore Slingers are an eighteen-member orchestra that specializes in pre-swing American dance music, with a particular focus on popular songs of the 1920s and early 1930s ideally suited for fox trots, rumbas and The Charleston.

Patrons are encouraged to dress in styles from the era. Ladies might consider feathered headbands and long beads, and gents will look dapper in black and white suits. Photo opportunities will be available and the best dressed couple will win space for a private party in MPAC’s Gallery. Specialty “speakeasy” cocktails will be available for guests 21 years and older.

Dancing in the aisles of the Courtroom Theater is permitted and encouraged. Learn the Charleston and other popular vintage dances at a free workshop during downtown McKinney’s High Noon on the Courthouse Lawn from noon to 1 p.m. on May 2.

General admission tickets are $15 and available for purchase online at mckinneyperformingartscenter.org, at MPAC, 111 N. Tennessee St. or by calling MPAC’s Emerson Ticket Office at 214-544-4630.
