McKinney Fire Department will be awarded a Public Protection Classification (PPC) rating of Class 1, the highest rating a fire department can achieve, by the Insurance Services Office (ISO) at the City Council meeting March 4. McKinney home and business owners could have the opportunity to save money on insurance with the improved classification, which goes into effect May 1.

McKinney is one of 18 communities in Texas and one of 60 communities in the country with a PPC rating of 1, which signifies superlative systems for water distribution, fire department equipment, firefighting personnel and fire notification facilities. The rating applies to all properties inside city limits within five miles of a fire station. The fire department previously held a Class 2 rating.

“This rating demonstrates our commitment toward providing exemplary public safety for our citizens,” McKinney Fire Chief Danny Kistner said. “We have worked hard to reach this designation. Not only do we hope our citizens will save on insurance, but our fire department will continue to provide excellent service to all of our residents.”

Some insurance companies use the PPC ratings from ISO to determine fire insurance rates within the city. Individual rate reductions may vary and are set by each insurance company for each property. McKinney residents and business owners are encouraged to call their fire insurance provider after May 1 to alert them to the new PPC level and determine if they qualify for a lower rate.
