Help fight cancer at the 2014 American Cancer Society Relay For Life of McKinney

April 23, 2014, McKinney, TX More than one million people in the United States will be diagnosed with cancer this year. The American Cancer Society funds research and treatment to help fight cancer through the Relay For Life fund-raising events.

Register a team or as a participant in the ACS Relay For Life of McKinney, which is presented by Texas Oncology-McKinney and will be held 7 p.m. Fri., April 25 to 7 a.m. Sat., April 26 at the Ballfields at Craig Ranch, 6151 Alma Road in McKinney. The fund-raising event is held overnight because cancer never sleeps.

“We all know too many people in our life that are affected by cancer, and for 13 years McKinney Relay For Life event has been fighting back in the community. We hope that everyone comes out and joins us at the event this Friday night,” said 2014 ACS Relay For Life of McKinney Event Chairperson Mike Egan.

The ACS uses money raised during Relay For Life events in various ways. Last year the ACS gave 16,500 cancer survivors rides to treatment and made nearly 200,000 round trips for patients and their caregivers. In 2012, the ACS saved 41,000 patients and their caregivers more than $26 million in lodging costs by providing free lodging when patients had to travel for treatment. Each year the ACS assists 1 million people who call 1-800-227-2345 by providing valuable cancer information and connecting patients to valuable resources. Since 1946, the ACS has invested more than $3.9 billion in cancer research. For more information about how the ACS assists cancer patients, or to learn ways to prevent cancer, please visit the ACS’s Web site www.cancer.org.

The first lap of the evening will feature registered Relay For Life of McKinney cancer survivors who will walk and be cheered on by friends and family members at 7:15 p.m. The Caregiver lap, which will feature registered caregivers of cancer patients and cancer survivors, will be held at 10:15 p.m. The Luminaria ceremony will be held at 9:15 p.m., and will feature lit Luminaria bags that list the name of a loved one who has either died from cancer or who is currently fighting the disease. Luminaria will be placed along the track and the lights will bedimmed during a moment of silence.
