Collin College has added new degrees and career tracks for the fall semester.

A new degree and field of study were approved by the Collin College Board of Trustees recently. These new opportunities will be available this fall semester, which begins Monday, Aug. 27.

These opportunities include:

Polysomnographic Technology

Polysomnography is the healthcare component dealing with sleep disorders and sleep studies. This program includes an associate of applied science degree totaling 67 credit hours and spanning 22 months. It will prepare students for an allied health career in the clinical care and management of sleep disorders and the administration of sleep studies.

The program will be one of only two associate-level programs in Texas. The program will offer a certificate track for board-registered respiratory therapists, nurses, electroencephalographers or physician assistants who wish to pick up additional certification. This track is also open to board-registered polysomnographic technologists who were trained on the job and wish to pursue a formal education in polysomnographic technology.

Meetings and Event Management

The Institute of Hospitality and Culinary Education located at the Preston Ridge Campus is offering this new associate of applied science degree totaling 64 hours that compliments the Meetings and Event Management certification program that the college has offered for five years.

Among the new courses included in the associate degree in Meetings and Event Management are “International Meetings and Conventions,” “Group Tour Operations” and a required internship (cooperative work experience). Students who earn an associate degree in Meetings and Event Management can obtain positions at hotels in sales or convention services or work with the social, military, educational, religious and fraternal (SMERF) market.

Criminal Justice Field of Study Academic Transfer Certificate

This new academic transfer certificate associated with the pre-existing Criminal Justice Field of Study is ideal for students seeking a bachelor’s degree and career in the criminal justice arena. The field of study entails five classes, including Introduction to Criminal Justice, Court Systems and Practices, Fundamentals of Criminal Law, Correctional Systems and Practices and Police Systems and Practices.

Those five classes total 15 credit hours. Combined with the 42 hours of core curriculum in addition to a sophomore-level literature class, a student can complete an associate of arts degree. Many of those credits will transfer to any public university in Texas.
