Collin County Council on Family Violence Hosts 6th Annual Interfaith Symposium
Empowering Clergy, Faith-based Counselors, and Faith Community Leaders on Family Violence Intervention
The 6th annual Interfaith Symposium, “Empowering the Faith Community to be Informed, Prepared and Act” will be held on Tuesday, April 14, 2015. The attendees include clergy, faith-based counselors and faith community leaders who are seeking best practices on family violence intervention. Literally thousands of Collin County and beyond residents are in touch with faith leaders on a weekly basis. Often a victim of family violence will seek help and guidance from their faith leaders before reporting the issue to authorities. These leaders and their staff need to be equipped with resources and action plans to provide their communities support, safety and healing. CCCFV will provide the attendees a resource kit to help remove the guesswork when reporting incidents to the authorities as well as educate on an organization’s legal liabilities.
Keynote speaker, Jan Edgar Langbein, is a 20-year veteran in the area of domestic and family violence prevention. She has been a relentless activist in efforts to end violence against women. From 1991-2013, Langbein served as Executive Director of Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support in Dallas. She currently serves as CEO of Shelter Ministries of Dallas, the parent organization to Genesis and the Dallas homeless Austin Street Center overseeing both agencies’ internal and external operations as well as funding and community education.
The Collin County Council of Family Violence (CCCFV) is facilitated by the Junior League of Collin County (JLCC) and is comprised of community leaders and professionals striving together to eliminate family violence in Collin County. The CCCFV provides unprecedented training, community networking, and unique hands-on experience working directly with community partners, elected officials, and leaders of over 60 community organizations to address the growing problem of family violence in Collin County. CCCFV serves as a statewide model of collaboration building formidable intellectual capital and implementing best practices to eradicate family violence in Collin County.
Since 2010, the Interfaith Symposium has trained over 150 faith community leaders providing guidance and support on how they can effectively impact individuals and families within their sphere of influence. Highly specialized professionals in the fields of Pastoral Care and Counseling, Psychology, Social Services, and Law Enforcement have led workshops on topics such as recognizing family violence, appropriately responding to reports of family violence, reaching out to suspected victims of family violence and identifying available community resources.
The 6th annual Interfaith Symposium, “Empowering the Faith Community to be Informed, Prepared and Act” will be held on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at Collin College, Preston Ridge Campus from 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
