The City of McKinney is reminding residents that dove hunting season begins on Saturday, Sept. 1.  Because hunting is permitted inside city limits (state law restricts hunting to areas of land that is greater than 10 acres), residents could hear shots within the city.

Hunting rules to remember:

  • Hunters must avoid shooting less than 1,000 feet from the property line of a public tract of land, school, hospital, or commercial day-care facility and at least 150 feet from a residence or occupied building.
  • Hunters must fire their weapons in a safe manner so projectiles do not cross the property line.
  • All hunters should have a Texas Hunting License with a Migratory Bird Stamp.

If you hear gun shots and are concerned that hunters may be violating hunting restrictions, call the non-emergency police line at 972-547-2700.
