MCKINNEY, TEXAS – Relay For Life of McKinney offers community members many ways to remember loved ones lost to cancer, celebrate the cancer survivors in their life and support friends and family currently fighting cancer. The luminaria ceremony is the perfect way for participants to pay a special tribute to their loved ones currently facing or lost to cancer.
“For me, the luminaria ceremony is the most moving part of Relay For Life,” said Amy Feagin, Relay For Life of McKinney Event Tri-Chair. “There’s never a dry eye in the house; the luminaria ceremony is a very special tribute to loved ones lost to cancer, and an amazing way to honor survivors.”
During the luminaria ceremony, participants will light their luminaria – a small, colored bag with a picture of their loved one on the outside. This year’s ceremony will begin at approximately 9:30 p.m., and luminarias will remain lit for the duration of Relay For Life.
Luminarias are available for purchase in four colors and prices:
- Yellow luminarias available for $10
- Green luminarias available for $25
- Orange luminarias available for $50
- Blue luminarias available for $100
Those interested in purchasing a luminaria should contact Amanda Downey or Christie Thornton at luminaria.relaymckinney@yahoo.com. Relay For Life participants are encouraged to sell luminarias to count toward their team’s fundraising goals. All luminaria proceeds benefit Relay For Life of McKinney and its parent organization, American Cancer Society and their fight to put an end to cancer. The deadline to order a luminaria is April 26 but luminarias will be available at Relay For Life as well. The deadline to include a photo on your luminaria is April 21.
