Susie Towber to Lead Lawson Early Childhood School

Principal Susie Towber, who has led Minshew Elementary School for the last six years, has been chosen as the new principal of Lawson Early Childhood School by McKinney ISD Superintendent Dr. J.D. Kennedy.

Lawson Early Childhood School is home to MISD’s Early Head Start, Head Start, Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities (PPCD) and Pre-Kindergarten programs. The position was vacated earlier this summer when Lawson principal Paige Hanks accepted the principal post at Press Elementary.

“I was pleased to hear that Susie Towber was interested in the principal position at Lawson Early Childhood School because she has shown herself to be such a tremendous leader. She has a true love for early childhood education and for students who are just entering their educational career,” said Kennedy. “Her passion, enthusiasm and positive attitude will carry her well in her new role, and we look forward to her work in that position.”

Towber is looking forward to the new opportunity as well. “I am so excited!” she said. “I am truly a kindergarten teacher at heart; that is where I started my career. I will always be a Minshew Colt—opening a school and creating an environment where all achieve is very special. But, my heart is in early childhood. I know the importance of education at an early age, and I cannot wait to get started!”

Towber joined McKinney ISD as an assistant principal at Minshew Elementary when the school opened in 2004. She became principal three years later.

During Towber’s tenure at Minshew, the school earned USDA Healthier School Challenge Gold School status from 2010–2014, was named a Healthy Zone School in 2012 and became an Intel Schools of Distinction National Finalist the same year.

Prior to her arrival in McKinney, Towber served as an assistant principal in Richardson ISD for six years and as a master teacher in Richardson for a year. Additionally, she taught third grade for nine years in Richardson ISD. Towber started her career in the New York Public Schools, where she taught kindergarten for two years.

Towber earned a Master of Science in Exercise Physiology as well as a degree in Mid-Level Management from Texas Women’s University. She earned credit toward a Master of Science in Education from Adelphi University of New York and received a Bachelor of Science in Education from Adelphi University.

“Minshew deserves the best possible principal that we can find,” said Dr. Kennedy, “and whoever replaces Ms. Towber will have big shoes to fill because of the positive leadership that she has demonstrated at Minshew Elementary.”
