Meals on Wheels and Senior Services of Collin County announced today that it will be participating in the national Mayors For Meals Day on March 20, 2013.

Mayors For Meals is a component of the March For Meals national campaign held during the month of March. This campaign is initiated and sponsored by the Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) to raise awareness of senior hunger and to encourage action on the part of local communities.

Over the years, Collin County mayors have shown their support by accompanying the local volunteers delivering the meals to homebound seniors. Each mayor or his or her appointed representative “rides along” on one local route, and not only delivers the meal, but has the opportunity to spend time with each senior. Invitations will be going out to each mayor asking for their participation and support by delivering meals on March 20th.

“The food and human contact we provide to seniors in Collin County is needed more than ever,” said Ray Ricchi, Executive Director of Meals on Wheels and Senior Services of Collin County. “The senior population is growing in this county and for over 37 years, Meals on Wheels has fulfilled its mission to promote the health, dignity and independence of those 60 years old and older while combating isolation. Each mayor’s participation in the Mayors For Meals program is a concrete way in which each city can underscore its support of this dynamic meal program,” Ricchi added.

In 2012, Meals on Wheels of Collin County delivered over 188,000 meals to over 1,200 seniors throughout the 848 square land miles of the county. The 65 daily routes are delivered by an average of 749 community volunteers each month between 11:00 and 1:00. There are 5 rural routes which Meals on Wheels staff delivers once a week; as well as delivering meals to local volunteer drop sites. The staff drives approximately 5,000
miles per month.
