Family Friendly Ideas for This Memorial Day Weekend

We all know that the last weekend of May truly marks the beginning of summer festivities. Not only does Memorial Day give us the opportunity to commemorate those who have given their lives in service of our country,  but it also encourages everyone to take a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and spend some time with loved ones.

As much as we would all love to spend the long weekend with our feet up at a lake house or ocean-front locale, that’s not always doable. So, here are some ideas for you and your family that won’t require you to leave the DFW area or shell out the big bucks for a vacation home.

Have a Red-White-and-Blue Kitchen Competition

If you’re like most American families, you’re probably having a get-together by the pool or in the backyard. Why not spice up your barbecue dinner with a some patriotic flare? Challenge everyone to a competition to see who can create the most unique (and tastiest) foods that match the holiday. Mix up strawberries, blueberries, and whipped cream to create a scrumptious American flag or research drinks that match the color scheme. Not only will you have fun, but you’ll also keep everyone happy and full.

Spend a Day at the Dallas Arboretum

The Arboretum is always a great place to visit, and they’re making Memorial Day Weekend the perfect time to explore nature. There will be children’s concerts, picnics with live music, and of course, gorgeous botanical surroundings. Plus, you can treat your kids to bubble parties and face painting, so the whole family can really enjoy the holiday.

Support a Worthy Cause

There are many organizations you can support in the DFW area over the long weekend. Carry the Load raises awareness and gathers funds to distribute to partners that assist national heroes. Other local organizations will be setting up events to clean up communities, support the armed forces, and more. See where you can be of service in your area!

Go on a Military Monument Scavenger Hunt

Believe it or not, there are more than a few memorials set up for our armed forces around the DFW area. You might not have even noticed them before, so now’s the perfect time for your family to go exploring. Make it a game and see how many you can visit before the weekend is over.

Create Some Patriotic Decorations

Memorial Day Weekend is the time to fly your American flag with pride. Whether you’re purchasing decorations or making your own, your family will have a fun time getting into the holiday spirit. Plus, it’s a great way to show your support for troops and you can use most of the decorations again when Fourth of July rolls around.

Run a Marathon

If you’re a runner, then Memorial Day Weekend is your time. The Multiple Sclerosis Marathon and Half, the Jim’s Goose Chase Marathon and Half, and the big Memorial Day Marathon and Half will all be taking place in the DFW area. Even if you aren’t an athlete, you can support the runners and watch.

So, what will you guys be doing with your long weekend? Comment with any suggestions you might have for others!
