Plano Community Invited to Discover Everything Parks and Recreation During July Parks and Recreation Month
Month-long celebration highlights undiscovered roles of local parks and recreation
July is Parks and Recreation Month and Plano Parks and Recreation wants the community to explore the “undiscovered” roles of Plano Parks and Recreation.
An initiative of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), Parks and Recreation Month invites people nationwide to explore A Lifetime of Discovery at their local parks, pools and recreation facilities.
Playgrounds, rec centers and summer camps are just a few things that come to mind when we think of parks and recreation, but today this industry encompasses much more. During Parks and Recreation Month, individuals can discover all the ways parks and recreation improves quality of life through science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programming; engaging activities for older adults; innovative health and wellness opportunities; community celebrations; athletic programs; outdoor education, and more.
Below are just a few activities planned in Plano this July for people of all ages and abilities:
- o Mondays: Moonlight Mondays at Tom Muehlenbeck Recreation Center from 7-9 p.m.
- o Tuesdays: Dance Nights from 7-9:15 p.m. for adults 50 years+
- o Wednesdays: Play in the Park program invites parents to bring their children
to Willowcreek Park each Wednesday from 9-10 a.m. to play and get to know
your neighbors
- o July 4: Free All-American Fourth Fireworks Celebration 5-10 p.m. at the Amphitheater at Oak Point Park
- o July 10: Pickleball with a clinic at Oak Point Recreation Center from 8-9 a.m.
- o July 12: Family Luau Night at Tom Muehlenbeck Recreation Center from 6-8:30 p.m.
- o July 20: Kids Night Out with a Twist at Oak Point Recreation Center from7-9 p.m.
- o July 21: Family Night Hike at Oak Point Park Nature & Retreat Center from 7:30-9 p.m.
“With a wide variety of programs at our pools and recreation centers against the backdrop of Plano’s parks, trails and nature preserves, there are numerous adventures waiting to be had right here in our own backyard,” Plano Parks and Recreation Director Robin Reeves said. “This July, we encourage people of all ages to discover something they never knew we offered and share the good news with friends and family. It is these unique experiences that, collectively, build the foundation for a healthy and happy community.”
In addition to providing free and affordable activities throughout the month of July, Plano Parks and Recreation invites residents, visitors and patrons to share their stories of how Plano’s parks, trails, rec centers and open spaces have made a positive impact on their lives. Those who would like to share their experience may do so by filling out a story card at any Plano Parks and Recreation facility or submitting their stories online atplano.gov/parksrecstory. These stories will be shared with the public as a way to lead others to new discoveries.
“As we continue to celebrate our 50th anniversary, we want to hear back from the people we serve. We are grateful to those who have made Plano Parks and Recreation a part of their lives over the years,” Reeves said. “We hope these stories will help introduce new residents and new park and recreation facility users to everything we have to offer.”
