Unfortunately, the DFW area isn't one of those places where autumn ushers in a rush of golden hues and gorgeous red trees. However, our state is vast, and there are many places nearby that do embody a more quintessential version of fall.
Looking to get out of town and find some seasonal beauty? Here are some of the best road trips to take between now and the end of November.
Camping in Lost Maples State Park
If you're on the hunt for changing leaves and a kaleidoscope of fall colors, then Lost Maples is the place to be during November. This is the peak foliage season, and with so many beautiful maple trees, the entire place practically explodes in reds and oranges. They have water/electricity campsites, as well as primitive campsites, so you can find whatever kind of accommodations you need. Do keep in mind that fall is the state park's busiest season, so visiting during the less crowded weekdays might be a good idea.
A Bed and Breakfast in Wimberly
Located just under five hours from DFW (a little past Austin) is a great little getaway town. Wimberly has a host of B&Bs, hotels and inns to stay at, and their market days are something you won't want to miss. While you're there, you should also check out the Blue Hole Regional Park and Jacob's Well. Although it might be too cold for swimming if you go during the autumn, the cool weather will make hiking much more enjoyable. For people who aren't looking for outdoor activities, there are wine tours and restaurants to keep you entertained.
Roughing It in Caprock Canyons State Park
Where else in the Lone Star State can you stumble across a heard of bison while taking a morning walk? Caprock Canyons State Park is home to some incredible wildlife, as well as a rugged, beautiful terrain. Stay in the park overnight in one of their primitive campsites, then take some time to check out the nearby Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Known as the "Grand Canyon of Texas," Palo Duro is 120 miles long and 800 feet deep at points. If you haven't seen it already, then it's high time you check it out.
Embrace an Adventure in Athens
This city embodies the perfect amount of small-town charm but is an easy hour and a half drive from DFW. Visitors flock to Athens for everything from fishing trips to a couple of relaxing days at a spa. However, what many people really recommend is checking out the crazy zip line and rope course that's nearby. Add a little excitement to your season by challenging your family to some fun high up in the autumn treetops.
Experience Fine Dining and History in Fredericksburg
Known for its tourism and quaint feel, the city of Fredericksburg certainly plays up its German heritage with beautiful architecture and great food and drink. See Beautiful Fall Colors in the Guadalupe Mountains
It's a long haul out to these mountains from the DFW area, but once you glimpse the changing leaves and picturesque backdrops, all of those hours in the car will be worth it. People love trekking out to the Guadalupe Mountains National Park between mid-October and mid-November in hopes of finding some fall beauty. Remember that parking (and camping) is first-come, first-serve, so getting there on a weekday or early on a Friday is your best bet for staking out a good spot.
