Summertime and theme park adventures are pretty much a package deal, which is why so many North Texans flock to Six Flags Over Texas during the summer. The park contains 212 acres of roller coasters, food, games, and general entertainment. The only problem? It's all outdoors, and Texas is hot during the summer.

If you want to take your family to Six Flags but aren't sure how you can make the experience pleasant when the sun is blazing and the temperatures are rising, here are some helpful tips:

  • Bring a reusable water bottle. Although you are not allowed to bring your own food or beverages into the park, you can bring a water bottle and fill it up throughout the day. Each visitor is allowed to bring their own bottle, and there are various water fountains stationed throughout the park. Staying hydrated is a key part of making the experience safe and fun. If you forget your water bottle, keep in mind that most restaurants will give you a free cup of ice water if you ask.

  • Dress appropriately. You might think that throwing on a tank top is the best way to stay cool, but really, wearing a shirt with sleeves that cover your shoulders is smarter. You should also don a hat to protect your face and eyes from the sun.

  • Don't be afraid to get wet. Even if you're usually not a fan of the water rides at Six Flags, they can provide a refreshing cool down session and leave you feeling much more comfortable afterward. The Log Jamboree, Splash Water Falls, and Thunder River will all give you a few splashes and take the temp down a notch. One note: do make sure to wear shoes that are water-friendly so you're not trodding around in sopping tennis shoes.

  • Schedule your day around breaks from the heat. Whether you're ducking in a gift shop, checking out an indoor attraction, or dining in a covered restaurant, it's vital that you find some occasional respite from the sun. Try to plan your shaded breaks out in advance so that you don't go more than an hour or two without a break. This will help prevent heatstroke and keep everyone feeling more energetic. Need to find some AC? Duck into Primo's Pizzeria, JB's Smokehouse BBQ, Johnny Rockets, or All-American Cafe.

  • Reapply sunscreen throughout the day. You probably won't escape the sunshine much while you're standing in lines and walking around, so it's important that you bring an extra bottle of SPF 30 to make sure everyone stays sunburn-free.

If you really want to avoid the worst of the summer heat, consider attending HOT SUMMER NIGHT this June 21! The park will be staying open past its usual closing time on the longest day of the year, so you can spend less time in the afternoon sun. Plus, there will be a dance celebration, a DJ, some giveaways, and more.
