A Fun Summer Weekend Trip: Swimming in Jacob's Well

Just outside of Austin lies a hidden gem that should undoubtedly be somewhere on your summer bucket list. Jacob's Well, a natural spring with crystal clear water and incredible shades of blue, is currently open for swimming. If you've never considered making a reservation and diving into the frigid waters, maybe these facts will change your mind.

You can showcase your daredevil personality by leaping off a rocky outcropping. In all honesty, that's one of the main reasons people show up at Jacob's Well. There are a couple of boulders that provide the perfect place for vaulting into the 30-foot blue hole. Attempt a summersault to wow the crowd or stick to a simple pencil dive to see how deep you can go. Either way, you'll receive a standing ovation from the audience that gathers around the cool water.

The spring is one of the most mysterious bodies of water in Texas. Several people have died while diving into the hidden crevices at the bottom of the well. If you're just visiting as a swimmer, you'll only be able to access the hole itself, which is very safe. If you're a scuba diver, you can explore numerous thin openings and caves that reach as far as 100-feet deep. When you visit and see the hole in-person, just floating above it is enough to send shivers down your spine.

It's a fantastic way to beat the heat. Because the water in the well flows from an artesian spring, you can count on it being a pretty chilly swim. However, during the blistering summer months, the cold water is wonderfully refreshing.

If you just want to see the well without climbing in, you can hike the trail and look at it for free. Swimmers will have to make reservations in advance in order to enjoy the crystal waters. Either way, if you're looking for a fun weekend activity, your family will make unforgettable memories at this one-of-a-kind spring.
