Curbsides in neighborhoods throughout McKinney will be lit at dusk on Fri., April 25 to help shed some light on the American Cancer Society during the Illuminate McKinney event.

Luminaria  will be placed along curbs in front of peoples’ homes to help promote the annual ACS Relay For Life fund-raising event that will take place the same evening beginning at 7 p.m. and lasting until 7 a.m. Sat., April 26 at the Ballfields at Craig Ranch. People may purchase a Luminaria for just $10 to honor the memory of loved ones who are currently undergoing cancer treatment, or those who have lost their battle with the disease.  Luminaria may feature a photo of someone and a message about or for that person. The deadline to order a Luminaria to be included in the Illuminate McKinney event is April 5.

This ceremony of light symbolizes the hope and perseverance with which cancer patients, their family, friends and co-workers fight. People can help pay tribute to a cancer survivor or honor the loving memory of someone who lost the battle. The gift is tax-deductible and will support the ACS in creating a world with more birthdays by helping to fund cancer treatment programs.

To help your neighborhood participate in Illuminate McKinney, please contact Beth Darling, the 2014 Relay For Life Illuminate McKinney Chairperson at bethdarling123@gmail.com or call 972-567-9013.

The ballfield lights will be dimmed to honor those who are currently fighting cancer, and those who have lost their battle with the disease.

“The Luminaria Ceremony at Relay for Life is my second favorite event at the Relay event, second to the Survivor Lap, which features cancer survivors. It gives everyone in the community and beyond a chance to remember or honor those who have fought cancer, and those who are still fighting cancer,” said Luminaria Ceremony Co-chairperson Gina Rosenberg. “It is a glowing symbol of our never ending quest to find the cure. Each lighted bag represents someone's love for a warrior who is battling and winning or who has lost, but not been forgotten.”

You may purchase and dedicate a Luminaria online for either the Illuminate McKinney event, or to be placed at the track during the Relay For Life event during the Luminaria Ceremony by visiting http://www.relayforlife.org/mckinneytx.
