Medical City McKinney continues to be a leader in improving the health of newborns and infants by earning the Texas Ten Step Program facility designation from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission for the fourth time.

The Texas Ten Step Program encourages breastfeeding as the preferred method of feeding for newborns and infants. Medical City McKinney joins a growing number of Texas birth facilities that are supporting new mothers and their decision to breastfeed.

Based on the World Health Organization (WHO)/ UNICEF’s Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, the program aims to assist a birthing facility’s support of breastfeeding mothers before, during and after delivery; encourages them to identify breastfeeding resources for the mother after she is discharged; and assists facilities in improving on national performance measures such as the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) Breastfeeding Report Card. The goal of the Texas Ten Step Program is to increase breastfeeding initiation rates to 82 percent.

Texas Ten Step facilities are asked to address 85 percent of the Ten Steps, be designated as a Texas Mother-Friendly Worksite, regularly evaluate its breastfeeding policies and maternity care practices and educate all healthcare staff routinely with evidence-based courses.

“Medical City McKinney first achieved the Texas Ten Step Program designation in 2011, and we’ve worked hard to maintain this designation and support breastfeeding to our new moms,” said Amanda Faggart, Medical City McKinney director of women’s & children’s services.

Five Medical City McKinney nursing units including emergency services, progressive care, surgical services, behavioral health and the Medical City ER Stonebridge have been recognized in the 2019 HCA Healthcare Unit of Distinction Awards. This annual program recognizes and rewards exemplary nursing units at HCA Healthcare facilities. HCA Healthcare is the parent company of Medical City Healthcare and has approximately 2,000 sites of care.

The “Unit of Distinction” designation is achieved through measurable, exemplary performance in the strategic areas of advocacy and leadership, consistency in nursing practice and operations and leveraging scale to drive performance. During 2019, approximately 2,200 HCA Healthcare nursing units participated in the program. Using specific criteria, nursing units are evaluated and scored based on performance.

“It’s a great honor to be recognized among the top-performing nursing units across the company,” said Cassidi Roberts, chief nursing officer of Medical City McKinney. “Our nurses are committed to the highest level of collaboration and teamwork.”

“The Unit of Distinction Awards recognize and celebrate excellence in nursing and acknowledge that it takes a high-performing team of nurses demonstrating a high level of commitment to achieve results like these,” said Jane Englebright, chief nurse executive and senior vice president of HCA Healthcare. “These awards help to unite our nursing community, all of us, toward a common goal of creating a patient-centered culture and keeping our commitment to the care and improvement of human life.”

Beverly Mukombe, RN

Medical City McKinney has recognized Judie Iloka, RN, orthopedic services, and Beverley Mukombe, RN, behavioral health services, with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. This award honors the amazing work nurses do for patients and their families every day.

Iloka was recognized by a patient that said, “Judie is extraordinary! We are blown away at the quality of care she provided. She is compassionate, professional, a role model, and an advocate. She listened and encouraged us.”

Mukombe was recognized for the award by a colleague that said, “Beverley notices everything and is always helpful to others’ needs. She is always supportive to all her colleagues and is friendly to patients and staff alike. She always has a kind word.”

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation was established by the J. Patrick Barnes family after he passed away in 1999 from complications resulting from an autoimmune disease. The care Barnes received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.  Nurses may be nominated for The DAISY award by patients, families and colleagues.

“We are proud to be among the healthcare organizations participating in the DAISY Award program,” said Cassidi Roberts, chief nursing officer at Medical City McKinney. “Nurses are heroes every day. It’s important that our nurses know their work is highly valued and The DAISY Foundation provides a way for us to do that.”
