Stonebridge United Methodist church has a mission this summer to feed sixty of the chronically hungry children at our adopted school, Malvern Elementary. These are children who have been identified by McKinney ISD through the McKinney Vento Homeless Act and the Food 4 Kids Program.

Throughout the school year, these children receive free hot meals on school days and food to take home for the weekends.  This program stops for the summer months, however, a child's need for food to fuel the brain and body does not stop.  During the summer, many of these children would go hungry with our partnership with Malvern.

“I love being a part of this important local mission. Jesus directs us to feed the hungry and that is what we are doing,” said Stonebridge UMC Malvern Coordinator Carol Dean.   “These families feel our love through our actions.”

“ We at Malvern appreciate Stonebridge United Methodist Church so very much.  Their love and kindness they show our Malvern family is extraordinary,” said Rhonda Gilliam, Malvern principal.

There is a cost of around $300 per week to purchase the groceries for each family’s food bags.  If you would like to help Stonebridge UMC provide food for these children, visit mysumc.org/giving to text to give, or you may send a check to the church. Please pray and consider the ways that you might help with this program.

With the recent events occurring in our community, one of the marks of the Christian community is the way they come together in times like this. Christians can be an example to others as to how they pray for each other and how they communicate with each other in disciplined and respectful ways.

This Sunday’s worship experience at Stonebridge United Methodist Church will be an opportunity to receive a word of good news and encouragement for how we as a community move forward from this moment into a brighter tomorrow for McKinney.  Together, we will seek to bring healing and hope to our great city. The sermon “When God Alters the Plan” will talk about what that looks like and will incorporate an opportunity to hear from the Mayor of McKinney, Brian Loughmiller, as part of the worship experience.

Please join us at Stonebridge United Methodist Church, 1800 S. Stonebridge Drive in McKinney at either 9 or 10:30 a.m. for Celebration Service or 10 a.m. in The Bridge.  Feel free to invite your neighbors and friends to attend with you as well.

The Stonebridge United Methodist Church men’s group hosted a car show over the weekend that benefited The Samaritan Inn. Thanks to the sponsors and attendees, a $10,000 donation will be made to Collin County’s only homeless shelter.

“We are thrilled to be the beneficiary of this past weekend’s car show and we are so grateful for the men of Stonebridge UMC.  All proceeds will be used for our new state of the art family shelter. The ground breaking for the shelter will be this fall, and when it opens, one hundred homeless families will have a place to stay and a program that leads to independence,“ said Samaritan Inn Executive Director Lynne Sipiora.

“I want to thank all of our sponsors and the community for supporting our event this past weekend. The show was a lot of fun, there were some great cars, but more importantly, we were able to raise over $10,000 for the Samaritan Inn,” said Stonebridge UMC car show coordinator Todd Adkins, “we had a great turnout for the show, especially considering we had to postpone the event for a week and we battled a less than ideal forecast on Saturday. We hope everyone enjoyed the show and we look forward to raising even more money next year.”

Stonebridge United Methodist Church is in the midst of a new sermon series titled “Where the Rubber Meets the Road.”  The Series is all about putting our Christian faith into action and being the hands and feet of Christ in the world.

After Sunday worship, the entire congregation gathered together to assemble trailmix in support of The SoupMobile, a Dallas based homeless ministry.  Stonebridge UMC has participated in this ministry over the last several years, but never as entire congregation until today.  The participation level was tremendous and over 1800 bags were assembled, exceeding their last record by over 200 bags!  The 1814 bags of trailmix will supply three and a half days worth of snacks for the area homeless population.

On a related note, during the month of March, Stonebridge UMC held a peanut butter drive to support the Community Food Pantry of McKinney.  Close to 800 jars of peanut butter were donated, exceeding their goal by 200 jars!

“Stonebridge UMC partners with the Community Food Pantry twice a year to collect food.  For March we were asked to collect 600 jars of peanut butter.  We exceeded our goal by collecting almost 800 jars!” said program coordinator Adriane Nelson.  “I was proud to represent Stonebridge UMC.  This congregation is truly mission minded and gave accordingly.”

If God is real, then what do we do about it? That’s the question the organizers of the IF:Gathering ask. Jennie Allen, Christian author and speaker, founded the IF:Gathering - gathering, equipping and unleashing women to live out their purpose.

IF:Gathering live streamed its first event from Austin, Texas last year and brought together over 150,000 women from more than 22 countries. This past February, the 2-day IF:Gathering live streamed its second conference. Around 2,000 women attended the actual event in Austin and 60,000 computers logged on to watch the live stream. Some of those computers had one person watching, other computers had hundreds of women watching.

Join us at Stonebridge United Methodist Church as we will be hosting If:Gathering McKinney March 27, 7 -10 p.m. and March 28, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.   We will join with women from around the world who have already participated in the IF:Gathering, or like us, are doing so at a later date. We will worship, discuss, and watch the session videos from the February 2015 event. The cost of the event is $25 and also covers food on both days. Visit www.mysumc.org and click on “events” to register or for more information.

Stonebridge United Methodist Church proudly presents the next performance of their concert and event series, Connections Band.

Connections Band is a unique cover-band that plays great music for a great cause. It is led by United Methodist clergy from the Dallas area that love to rock out! That core is joined by dozens of musicians, who faithfully perform the great hits of classic rock. Shows have included James Taylor, Chicago, Eagles, Doobie Brothers, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, Dan Fogelberg, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, and dozens more.  Every show is free, but a "love offering" for charity will be taken.

“One of the fun things about Connections Band is that it shows a side of pastors that aren’t always seen. Yes, pastors have serious jobs and deal with serious issues, but we are also people who like to have fun and who like to utilize all of our God-given talents- even the ones we don’t often get to use in church,” said Stonebridge United Methodist Church Senior Pastor, and Connections Band drummer, John McLarty.

Connections has played more than 50 shows for tens of thousands of people and raised $260,000 for charity.  Please join them on Friday, February 20, 2015 7:00 p.m. at Stonebridge United Methodist Church, 1800 South Stonebridge Drive in McKinney.

Another exciting season of Upward soccer is right around the corner at Stonebridge United Methodist Church.  With that brings a new opportunity to broaden the spiritual, mental, and physical health of our children.

Raising confident kids with a healthy level self-esteem level is like outfitting them with a suit of armor against the challenges of the world. The tone of positivity within the Upward Sports program can be key in developing that armor.  Through relationships with both their coach and teammates, students will feel capable, loved and accepted. Kids who feel good about themselves are better equipped to handle conflicts and negative pressures, both now and later in life.

Given the increasing number of overweight and obese children, coupled with higher rates of serious diseases in children, parents are interested in how exercise can help.  Upward Sports programs provide weekly practices and games that will get your children moving. Studies show that active kids have fewer struggles with weight, have stronger bones and muscles and are less likely to develop diseases and chronic conditions in childhood and beyond.  Exercise also has significant brain development benefits- active kids experience higher levels of cognitive performance and focus. And of equal importance- IT’S FUN!

As parents, our goal is to raise “healthy” kids and Upward Sports programs can play an important role in that healthy development.  As you look ahead to the Spring season and your families’ activities, consider Upward Soccer for your child(ren). Registration is currently open and can be found on the Stonebridge United Methodist Church Sports Ministry page at www.mysumc.org.
